Farah

Innocent,

master

loctician

Although she had been hairstyling since a young age, Farah vowed to become a full time natural hairstylist on her 21st birthday, 14 years ago.

At the time, she performed multiple styles such as  : loc maintenance, braids, cornrows, twists, etc. Over the years, she developed a passion for locs and realized a lack of resources and references for locs  in  Montreal.

She founded L'ABC des Locs in 2019, her salon which exclusively caters to a clientele that has locs, in order to give this hairstyle the recognition it deserves.

The world of locs is so versatile. There is something for every taste. It should be natural for us to try locs at least once in our life.  If the majority of us have used a perm, we can give locs a try because everything we look for in straight hair , we find in locs.

FAQs

  • 1. What are locs?
First of all, locs are another way to wear your natural hair, it's a hairstyle. This is a so-called permanent protective hairstyle. That is to say a hairstyle that requires little maintenance and that you keep for the long term. To accomplish this, you must section your hair and weave it in a chosen technique and let these locks evolve into locs, which takes several months. In other words, we could say that we create a canvas in which the locs can evolve. For those who have curly hair, it saves a lot of time on a daily basis and allows us to better observe hair growth through an easy and simple hair routine.
  • 2. How to start locs?
There are several ways to start locs: either with vanilla, coils, braids, extensions, interlocking or instant locs. Either way, the initial look of locs is not their final look. Locations change and transform.
  • 3. How to take care of your locs?
Locs are no different from natural hair. Although each routine is personalized to each person, certain actions are key to the healthy growth of locs: protecting your hair, doing touch-ups, washing and moisturizing your hair regularly.
  • 4. What are the differences between retwist and interlock?
Twists and interlocks are different hair manipulation techniques. has. The retwist: Consists of turning each section of hair on itself with or without products. They are then placed using tongs and a drying session. b. Interlocks: Consists of tightening the hair regrowth using a hook. This technique helps accelerate the transformation of hair into locs because it is “irreversible”. C. Needle work: Consists of using the frizz to shape or tighten the length of the locs.
  • 5. How are locs washed?
The locs are washed using water and shampoo. They can be washed as often as once a week up to at least once a month. The frequency with which they are washed varies depending on the stage of the locs in their journey, the client's schedule or according to the recommendation of the loctician following a consultation. The more products your hair routine includes, the more they can stick to your locs, requiring lots of rinsing and deep washes. So, we recommend keeping your routine simple.
  • 6. The difference between microlocs and sisterlocks?
These two types of locs represent the category of microlocs. The two appear to be the same, but certain details make all the difference. For example, when locs are small, they are called microlocs. There are no rules, laws, or techniques specific to microlocs. However, not all small locs are sisterlocks. At the ABC of Locs, we consider more than 200 microlocs. We start it with braided twists at the roots or interlocking. The root maintenance technique is interlock. This is what we prefer for our microlocs. Sisterlocks™ are a brand identity. They are made according to a precise and unique method and protocol particular to the Sisterlocks ™ brand. All Sisterlocks™ representatives have been trained by the company. They use a precise tool and promote the company's philosophy of forging healthy, long locs without the use of chemicals. The goal of this hair system is to maximize hair volume. At the ABC of Locs, we choose to start the microlocs with braided twists at the root or interlocking. The root maintenance technique is interlock. This is what we prefer for our microlocs.
  • 7. Is a certain length of hair required to start locs?
To start locs we prefer to work with a minimum of 3 inches of hair.
  • 8. Can I start locs with straight/relaxed hair?
The only method that allows you to start your journey with relaxed hair is micro interlocking. In this case yes, you need at least an inch and a half of regrowth
